NSAIDs are drugs that help to treat inflammation. These drugs act
on some of the same biochemical pathways as steroids, but are both
less potent, and have fewer side effects than steroids. Many of
these drugs are well known and available over the counter, including
ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Naprosyn) and aspirin, but there are
several NSAIDs which are less well known. These drugs are often
useful adjuncts in treating ocular inflammatory conditions such
as scleritis and uveitis.
Like all drugs, NSAIDs have side effects that can
be dangerous, most notably stomach irritation. Prolonged NSAID use
may necessitate therapy with drugs that prevent gastritis or peptic
ulcers.
NSAIDS are commonly used to treat arthritis, and more information
about NSAIDS can be found at the ABOUT
ARTHRTITIS website
